Hollow Lane Club

MPC service – Bid writing/evaluation and monitoring

The Hollow Lane Club is dedicated to enhancing the lives of children and young people with special needs and their families, by providing exciting and progressive out of school activities for children and their siblings across three locations in Devon. The club runs from two Devon schools: Ellen Tinkham in Exeter and Bidwell Brook in Dartington, and at the Ellen Tinkham School FE College, Exeter. The Hollow Lane Club is financially independent of the schools and raises all its own funds. The club’s vision is to be able to offer similar services across both its two school sites and expand its activities across all three sites. The club offers a range of out of school clubs and activities including after school clubs, Saturday clubs, a sibling’s club, youth group and a comprehensive summer club programme. The club also provides vital respite for families.

Key issues

The activities of the club had been steadily expanding and there was a need to secure grant funding to ensure future growth and sustainability. The club had reached stage two of a five year Big Lottery Reaching Communities Grant but needed support to complete the application plus support to research and apply for additional grant funding.

What we did

We began working with The Hollow Lane Club in July 2017 and are now in our third year. During this time we have been successful at raising valuable funding for their club activities.

Bid writing: Miles Phillips Consulting Ltd were successful in helping to secure the five year Reaching Communities Grant which was awarded in February 2018 for £364,962. In addition we have secured an additional 20 grants from other trusts and foundations to the value of £110,757.

Evaluation: We have compiled and written the evaluation and end of grant reports to funders, collating information from staff and trustees. We compiled templates for collecting data for all club activities for reporting purposes to funders. We met with staff and delivered an informal training session on evaluation and outcome measures.

Agreed outcomes:

Secured Reaching Communities grant.
Researched and submitted bids to other trusts and foundations.
Raised grant income to agreed target.
Completion of evaluation reports to all funders.
Additional value

Evaluation: support and guidance to staff.

Change MPC has made to organisation

“We engaged Miles Phillips Consulting two years ago, and throughout this period they have been professional and responsive, delivering a personal, flexible and tailored service to meet our requirements. They have invested time to get to really know the charity, and have been able to offer their expertise in a number of areas, one being to help the charity secure grants from a much more diverse range of funders. They have also delivered bespoke solutions when requested, as well as training for our staff to support some of the evaluation work MPC under for the charity.

We have built a strong working relationship with MPC and look forward to continuing to work productively together in the future. “
